Understanding Maintenance Factors

When designing a lighting system, it is important to consider how the lighting will perform over time. Maintained illuminance (EM) establishes the minimum average level of illumination to be maintained on the reference plane throughout the specified maintenance period, taking into account factors such as light source depreciation, dirt accumulation and other maintenance factors.

A lighting system's performance gradually decreases over time. Applying a light loss factor allows the installation to meet minimum illuminance levels over the life of the installation. Calculating the appropriate light loss factor is therefore recommended so that your project remains compliant over the lifetime of the installation.

Calculating the Maintenance Factor

To calculate the Maintenance Factor, the following values are required:

  • LLMF – Lamp/Lumen Maintenance Factor
Accounts for the reduction of lumen output.
  • LSF – Lamp Survival Factor
Accounts for lamp failure. For LED systems, this is often 1.0 based on spot replacement of failed luminaires.
  • LMF – Luminaire Maintenance Factor
Accounts for dirt accumulation in and on the luminaire.
  • RSMF – Room Surface Maintenance Factor
Accounts for dirt and ageing of room surfaces.
