Brooke Street Pier - Hobart, TAS

With the transformation of the busy area,
the Brooke Street Pier is now described as
a distinctly different waterfront precinct.

Southern Lighting and Distribution, along with Eagle Lighting Australia were eager to work on the re-development of the Brooke Street Pier in Salamanca, Hobart utilising our Simes Skill Rectangular luminaire. In working with architects, Circa Morris-Nunn and lighting designers, Point of View Melbourne we were able to transform the new pedestrian forecourt in January of 2015.

The Simes Skill range is a unique LED luminaire that utilises the pinnacle of electronic technology within a 30mm deep body. This allows Skill to provide excellent light quality with a total absence of glare.

With the transformation of the busy area, the Brooke Street Pier is now described as a distinctly different waterfront precinct.  The iconic location has existed in various forms over the last 150 years. The developers were keen to revive the spirit of the old and deliver a new look where eclectic Tasmanian businesses can thrive.

The building in itself is unique as it rises and falls with the tide. So essentially it is a building and a boat. The area is also a working cruise and ferry terminal and a multi-function space. With an upper shell resembling a translucent skin that glows in the night, the new pedestrian forecourt illuminated by the Skill helps to provide an urban space for the people and visitors of Hobart to enjoy.

The building itself was actually constructed further up the Derwent River at Montague Bay. It was then floated down the Derwent on a king tide to its final location on the Hobart waterfront. The lighting solution for the Brooke St Pier forecourt had to be able to handle the harsh coastal environment, whilst offering a high level of protection from vandals. At the same time we had to offer an aesthetic that complemented the modern and innovative architecture of the new floating building, without offering any glare that could detract from the evening outlook of the structure. In the end, the perfect solution for lighting designer Point of View was the Simes Skill wall light. Its sleek modern appearance, superior visual performance, combined with the trademark Simes build quality ensured it ticked all the boxes. Therefore blending seamlessly into Hobart’s newest public space.

The Skill by Simes is an innovative outdoor light fitting with a very slim profile. It is available with a recessing box where a flush mounted look is required, and is also available as a surface mounted option. The surface mounted installation at Brooke Street Pier combines all the advantages of a recessed fitting without having to build housing into the wall. This means installation is easy and extremely user friendly.

The Skill family is available in round, square and in rectangular variations and is offered in a number of sizes and variations. The Skill was also a Red dot award winner in 2015.
